Rooted deep in the Christian story is the foundation for all human rights, the infrastructure for compassion, the footings upon which the impulse to protect, aid and care for all people is premised – namely, the image of God imprinted within every human being.
Since all humans bear the image of God, the reflected glory of God, any violence against one person is an offense against God and a smear on his glory. Simply because they are human, because they bear intrinsic moral value, every human life is precious, honoured and bearing dignity.
And so we condemn and lament the violent attacks in Orlando, we grieve with the families and friends of the victims, and we pray for God to comfort, strengthen, protect and heal.
“Jesus who destroyed the dividing wall of hostility and hatred, make us warriors of peace and agents of hope, learning what it means to love mercy, do justice, and walk humbly with you.”
